ONIBUS COFFEE ETHIOPIA / Guji Dimtu
The Dimtu Wate processing station, located in the Hambela region of Guji, Ethiopia, primarily receives coffee cherries harvested by approximately 600 smallholder farmers from villages such as Buku Saysa and Dimtu (Kebele).
The Wate processing station is the highest altitude of Gujoo's many processing stations, specializing in G1 grade coffee. The harvest season lasts from December to early February of the following year. During the harvest season, local residents join as pickers, with approximately 100 to 150 people participating in the harvesting work.
The coffee trees in this area are relatively young, around 10 to 20 years old. As the coffee trees in the surrounding area gradually age, leading to a decline in quality, this processing station was established in 2019 to ensure the continued production of high-quality coffee.
The processing station has introduced an environmentally friendly pulper manufactured by Penagos, which efficiently removes the mucilage layer while reducing water consumption. This not only protects the environment but also ensures the stable production of clean and uniform batches.
In addition, Gujoo has also implemented a number of social welfare programs in the area, including collaborating with American bakers to provide reusable sanitary napkins for 1,000 female students and promoting a water pump project equipped with water purification filters to improve the community's living environment.
