The ancestor of making tumblers is said to be the ninth-generation abbot of the Bodhidharma Temple in Takasaki, Dongyue, who carved the wooden mold of the tumbler. He then handed over the work to farmers during the off-season as a sideline business, and then sold the finished product in the off-season. Put them out for sale on festival days. To make a tumbler, many sheets of special Japanese paper are repeatedly stacked and pasted on a wooden model. After drying, the paper is cut open from the back to create the shape. The characteristic of the tumbler is that it has a heavy bottom and can quickly return to its original position even if it tilts. Therefore, the tumbler will never fall over, which is why it has become a symbol of luck. At present, Takasaki's production accounts for about 80% of Japan's national output.
