Mel Coffee GUATEMALA El Platanillo Natural Geisha
San Marcos is a coffee-producing region surrounded by volcanoes, hence its nickname "Volcano San Marcos". Among them, Mount Tajumulco is 4,220 meters above sea level and is the highest mountain in Central America. In addition, the nearby Gaoming Mountain borders Mexico and has an altitude of 4092m. The soil in San Marcos is composed of multiple layers of tephra soil, rich in minerals, phosphorus and sulfur due to the ancient volcanic activity of the Tajumulco and Tacaná mountains. As a result, the area is extremely fertile and produces a large amount of coffee and a variety of other flora and fauna.
High mountains and volcanoes also shape the region's climate by blocking moist winds from the Pacific Ocean. As a result, the region receives more rainfall than any other area in Guatemala, up to 5,000 mm per year, creating a variety of microclimates, from humid jungles covered in mosses and orchids to cloud forests. El Platanillo Farm was purchased by owner Mr. Samwell, Mr. Stuart's father, in 1977 and was managed by Mr. Samwell until 1985. When his son Stuart took over the farm in 1985, he switched to producing high-quality, environmentally friendly coffee. Hunting of animals is prohibited on the plantations and even people living on the plantations need special permission to cut down trees on the plantations. There are various certification systems now, but there was no such certification system at that time, so the farms created high-quality coffee and environmentally friendly coffee based on their own improvement goals. Obtained RFA (Rainforest Alliance Certification) in 2005. In 2011, we were certified by RFA as the world's first climate-friendly farm. As part of its social activities, El Platanillo Farm collaborated in the creation of Nuevo Platanillo School and donated land for its construction. We have worked generously with the school to improve its operations and recently introduced a computer lab with internet connectivity. Children in the area are now able to learn basic computer operations from an early age.
