PHILOCOFFEA 219 COLOMBIA Tipica Washed
This coffee comes from the Planadas region of Tolima state and is produced by a young farmer in his thirties named Jorge. Until the early 2000s, Planadas was under guerrilla influence and was not considered a prosperous area. Reaching this area requires over four hours of travel along unpaved roads and across streams, which is quite a challenge. However, once you arrive at the farm, you will continue to be amazed by its vast potential. Jorge is the third generation owner of this farm and he only started producing specialty coffee 4 to 5 years ago. In his first appearance at the 2022 Cup of Excellence (COE), he placed 3rd, and most recently finished 24th at the 2023 Cup of Excellence (COE), further igniting his passion for coffee production.
The coffee I introduce today is the Typica variety, produced at the El Paraiso farm in the Pranadas Highlands and processed by Jorge. Although this Typica is washed, it undergoes 60 hours of anaerobic fermentation, which enhances the variety’s inherent fruity aroma. Due to Planadas' favorable altitude, the coffee remains clean and not over-fermented.
The roast is lighter but not overpowering in acidity; instead, you get to fully enjoy the beans' inherent rich sweetness. The aroma is fragrant when you open the package, making you look forward to the brewing process.
The flavor is reminiscent of purple fruits like grapes and raisins. There's also a sparkly feel that makes it feel really juicy. The finish has hints of brown spices like cloves, adding a unique twist to the clean, sweet finish. Surprisingly, it even has a hint of craft cola.
This coffee displays the typical cleanliness of washed coffee combined with juicy fruitiness and rich sweetness. It is a high-quality Colombian coffee that exudes both meticulousness and playfulness.
